David Field

David FieldDavid N. Field is a South African presently living in Basel, Switzerland where his wife, Caroline is a pastor in the Evangelisch-Reformierte Kirche Basel Stadt (The Reformed Church of the Canton of Basel Stadt). He is a graduate of the University of South Africa (B.Th and B.Th. Hons.) and the University of Cape Town (M.A. and Ph.D.). He has taught systematic theology and theological ethics at a number of universities and colleges in Southern Africa.

In 2006 he was asked to coordinate the development of an internet based distance learning program in Methodist Studies for people preparing for the ministry in Methodist Churches across Europe. In 2008 the program became the Methodist e-Academy. In addition to its original program in Methodist Studies the e-Academy is now offering further education for ordained and lay leaders within European Methodist Churches with a focus on issues of mission and church renewal. He is also a Research Fellow in the Research Institute for Theology and Religion at the University of South Africa.

The focus of his work is on equipping people for ministry in contemporary Europe and as part of this he has been involved in a variety of discussions within and beyond Methodist Churches on issues relating to theological education.  He his main research interest lies in Methodist theology and ethics, and is he presently working on a long term project seeking to develop a contemporary theological ethic rooted in the Methodist tradition. As part of this he is involved in a research project on Methodist responses to the changing political context of South Africa in the twentieth century. In addition he has research interests in eco-theology, the theology and ethics of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, and various theologies of liberation particularly those that have emerged in Southern Africa.
