Summer Wesley Seminar at Duke

I would like to remind you of the Summer Wesley Seminar at Duke this summer, as was noted in the Methodist Review Newsletter that was just put online by Rex Mathews. This year is the tenth anniversary of the first SWS in 2004. There will be some scholars from previous seminars to mark the occasion. The list of 75 previous participants can be seen at http://divinity.duke.edu/sites/default/files/documents/cswt/Previous_SWS_Participants.pdf and reads like a Who’s Who of Methodist Studies, including many John Wesley Fellows, Dempster Fellows, teachers of United Methodist Studies, and people who have worked on Methodist topics in doctoral programs in a variety of schools. Randy Maddox and I provide the leadership for the program.\r\n\r\nThe SWS consists of about a dozen people who are working on projects related to Methodist studies, broadly considered, and attend the sessions at Duke for three or four weeks. About half of them are graduate students and half are more established scholars and teachers, making for lively exchanges in the weekly seminar meetings. The rest of the time can be spend on doing research, writing, and talking with the Methodism scholars at Duke. The SWS provides housing, parking, and library costs. We also can sometimes help with transportation (including international) and food. Details can be seen at http://divinity.duke.edu/initiatives-centers/cswt/research-resources/summer-wesley-seminar.\r\n\r\nWith the doctoral programs, curricular and extra-curricular study programs, regular summer seminars, and extensive web presence, Duke is trying to support and encourage the development of Methodist Studies world-wide. If you are presently working on a research/writing project in some area of Methodist studies (such as a dissertation, article, lecture, or book), could benefit from spending a concentrated period of time on your project, and would like to use the Duke research resources as well, we hope that you will consider going to the Summer Wesley Seminar at Duke, which this year will be from May 26 to June 20.\r\n\r\nApplication forms, which should be returned by the end of January, can be found at http://divinity.duke.edu/sites/default/files/documents/cswt/2014%20Summer%20Wesley%20Seminar%20application.pdf.\r\n\r\nPlease indicate on the registration form if you are a teacher of United Methodist Studies, a Dempster Fellow, or a John Wesley Fellow (senior or currently supported).\r\n\r\nThank you for your consideration, and best wishes in your work.\r\n\r\nRichard P.
